Kalpana Chawla was born on 1 July 1961 in Karnal, Punjab. Her father’s name was Banarasi Lal Chawla and mother’s name was Sanyjothi Chawla. Kalpana was the youngest of her four siblings.

Kalpana’s father was a very hardworking man.  He migrated from Multan at the time of partition in 1947. He faced many difficulties in his life.

Kalpana was very fond of reading and writing since childhood. Kalpana’s nickname was monto. When her aunt went to enroll her in school, she suggested three names and she liked the name Kalpana among them.

Kalpana was always in the top 5 in school. She was very fond of science. One day Kalpana saw a picture of Mars in the magazine, since then Kalpana decided that she should make her career in aerospace.

But all this was not easy for Kalpana because science was not developed at that time.  Kalpana earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College.

After that, in 1982, Kalpana Chawla moved to the USA and there she obtained a degree in Aerospace Engineering from University of Texas.  In 1986, She also completed her PhD.

Kalpana started working for NASA in 1988. Kalpana got citizenship of America in 1991. She was ready to make history and create her own success story of kalpana chawla.

In 1991, she applied for NASA Astronaut Corps and was selected for it.  Kalpana took her first flight in 1996.

Kalpana’s first space mission began on 2 May 1997. Kalpana became the first Indian woman to travel in space. Chawla traveled up to 10.4 Million miles in the first mission. This journey was 372 hours long.

Columbia flight first made its flight in 1981. By 2003, this flight had flown 27 times. For this reason, the condition of this flight was very bad.

7 people died in the 1986 crash. Learning from this, NASA made considerable improvements in the shuttles. At that time, the development of science was in the initial phase, so this mission was also new to NASA.

What Happened With Kalpana Chawla In Space

In 2003, the whole country was waiting for Kalpana to return. But in February 2003, such news came that made the whole country sad. Seven passengers were not told by NASA about the hole in the spacecraft, whose seven astranaouts had to bear the brunt of losing their lives.

Kalpana Chawla’s vehicle was reported to have disintegrated at an altitude of 63 kilometers, causing Kalpana’s death. Along with Chawla, 6 other astronauts were also killed.

However, later it was also reported that Kalpana Chawla had died on the flight. She was 41 years old at that time. The whole country is very proud of Kalpana Chawla.

Kalpana Chawla has been awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA Space Flight Medal and NASA Distinguished Service Medal.

The girls’ hostel at Punjab Engineering College is named after Chawla And Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College was built where Kalpana Chawla was born.

1. Kalpana Chawla did not have any name till her school admission till then she was called by her nickname. She was named Kalpana Chawla at the time of school admission.

2. Kalpana Chawla’s father was a very charming person. At first he had a grocery store, later he learned engineering himself.

3. Chawla’s father wanted to make her a doctor or teacher but she was interested in space. In the eighth grade, Kalpana expressed her desire to become an engineer.

4. Kalpana Chawla was the first indian woman to travel to space and the second person of Indian origin. Rakesh Sharma had traveled to space before this. 

5. As a child, Chawla was so intelligent that she used to map geography herself in class. She was always in top 5 in her class result.
